Understanding your menstrual cycle and when ovulation occurs is an important part of fertility care.
For some patients, cycle monitoring may be all that is needed to better understand ovulation and optimise timing. For others, additional support such as ovulation induction or intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be recommended.
Your treatment plan will depend on your individual circumstances and fertility goals.

Cycle monitoring is often an early step in fertility treatment. It helps us understand your individual cycle and identify whether and when ovulation is occurring.
Monitoring may involve ultrasound scans and, where appropriate, blood tests to assess follicle development, hormone levels and the uterine lining.
Understanding your cycle can help your fertility specialist identify the most appropriate timing for conception and determine whether any additional treatment may be beneficial.
-
For some patients, ovulation may be irregular, infrequent, or not occur consistently. Ovulation induction uses fertility medication to encourage ovulation or make ovulation more predictable.
Ovulation induction may be recommended where there is an ovulation-related fertility issue and may also be considered in some other fertility circumstances.
Treatment is monitored to understand how your ovaries are responding and to help identify the appropriate timing for ovulation.
Ovulation induction may be used with timed intercourse or, for some patients, alongside IUI.

IUI is a fertility treatment in which prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
The aim is to bring sperm closer to the egg at the appropriate time, increasing the opportunity for fertilisation.
IUI may be considered in a range of circumstances, including some cases of unexplained infertility, ovulation difficulties or when donor sperm is being used.
IUI can be performed in a natural cycle or may be combined with ovulation induction, depending on your individual treatment plan.
-
There is no single approach to fertility treatment that is right for everyone.
Your fertility specialist will consider factors such as your menstrual cycle and ovulation, age, ovarian reserve, sperm health, fallopian tube health and your fertility history when discussing your options.
For some patients, understanding and timing the natural cycle may be appropriate. Others may benefit from medication to assist ovulation, while IUI or other fertility treatments may be recommended depending on individual circumstances.
Our aim is to recommend the simplest and most appropriate treatment for you, while providing clear information and support throughout your fertility journey.
