This is a laboratory test performed on embryos created through IVF/ICSI to assess whether they have the correct number of chromosomes or whether there is a known genetic abnormality before they are transferred to the uterus. The technique involves a small sample of cells being removed from the outer layer of a developing embryo at the blastocyst stage and cells are analysed to determine whether the embryo has the normal number of chromosomes (46) and/or is genetically unaffected by the known condition.
